WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ALIVE?
December 31st marks the end of this feature. Going out with a wonderful message from author Dick Russell author of “Eye of the Whale” and several other great books. (dickrussell.org).
Feeling alive ultimately entails ongoing commitment to who and what we love. It requires a willingness to explore new and often uncharted waters, both externally and internally. There is struggle involved, in order to transcend what you think you want or is expected of you. If we are here on this planet to serve some greater purpose, then staying truly alive implies humbling ourselves to finding and being true to that destiny.
Thank you Dick and thanks to all of you who contributed and inspired in this feature.

What does it mean to be alive! What does it feel like to be alive?
Boarding a plane nine years ago I changed seats so that my husband who’d gotten horribly sunburned would have more ease on the trip (One word to all Englishmen who snorkel at the equator—suncreen!) The choice that I made because of his discomfort saved my life and his. Who can guess where our actions or journeys take us. A beautiful ode penned by a beautiful soul Terry Erwin (entomologist and world conservationist). for whom being alive is the passion and pleasure of saving the worlds amazing species draws this celtic month of death and rebirth to a close A special thanks Bob Shaye, (Hollywood studio owner) Carl Safina (author and conservationist) and Diana Bourel (yogini) to Paul Dayton, Professor Oceanography, Scripps Institution and an inspirational scientist for the planet and Terry Erwin (entomologist and world conservationist)
for agreeing and then following through with their writings on what it means to be alive. I’ve shared extraordinary and often wild moments with each of these friends (some too wild to mention!!) but this opened up a new dimension to our conversations and friendships.
A huge thanks to you who sent me your most private thoughts which often led to new dialogues and community among us- and to those who allowed me to share those thoughts here on the comments page. Your words and inspirations made a difference to how I see the world today- Now, how wonderful is that!!!
STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT ADVENTURE!
BACKGROUND TO THIS FEATURE. Nine years ago on Halloween I survived the crash of a 747 jetliner. Flying from Taiwan to Los Angeles, our plane crashed and exploded on take off. I know how lucky I am. Each year at Halloween I celebrate that I am alive. This year I’m asking what does it mean to feel alive? For me, I know I was born to be a scientist and to explore the edges of knowledge passionately and to the core of my being- and then to come back to tell the tales. But this year I’m celebrating on this forum with friends whom I admire for their love of life, how they live, and inspire me - They are among those whom I feel fortunate to know as friends. I’ve asked them to share in a brief essay or note what it means for them to feel aliveJoin us and share your thoughts and we’ll add them.
