Why I’m rebuilding the site

As many of you know, I work on the ecological and human interface of natural disasters (cyclones, tsunamis, volcanoes). After Cyclone Nargis,  I wrote a  scientific posting  on the regions’ ecology and the likely impacts of the storm on the ecosystem. The information was reported worldwide, including in US and Asian newspapers. I did some follow up interviews for those publications. The result was a first for me. My original blog-site was hacked! All reference to the event -Cyclone Nargis - and all my scientific posting disappeared.  At the same time, several scientists who’d worked in the region (Burma/Myanmar) were unable to return there, and it was made clear that our scientific input was very unwelcome.

Scientific information is  precious. It’s our most objective source of knowledge about our planet, our universe, and ourselves. Science has no political or moral opinion. But a scientist’s work can heal, help, comfort and better the lives of millions of people.  Science is uniquely human. It’s a gift of knowledge that belongs in the public domain.   And I’m  continuing to share my knowledge with those who may need it, or want it. I do it because it’s morally right and because it’s my professional responsibility. And because the voice of science should not be silenced.

Only my blog was affected.  I shut it down and for security reasons have started afresh. And so here I am in a new place.  But ....Still Here!!!

No one should approach the temple of science with the soul of a money changer.  ~Thomas Browne
