Starting in 2010, and before there was such appreciation of the value of natural ecosystems in protecting shorelines and beaches, we embarked on a first of its kind dune restoration at Gouverneur. The dunes, rebuilt to full maturity in 2 years, maintained the beach and withstood 4 hurricanes and several storms. That story is here and here. In 2017, Category 5 Hurricane Irma struck St Barths. The dunes held the line and provided protection but they were damaged in the process. After Irma, the decision was made to restore the Gouverneur dunes to full integrity and functionality,; they can again provide beauty, habitat, beach, enjoyment, and protection. This work is underway (see slideshow below) Please come back to see how the restoration is progressing. Nature based solutions are an important part of resilience. But they must be properly evaluated and implemented to work effectively. (See guideline for when and how to incorporate ecosystem-based solutions). Thanks to the remarkable dedication and action of Jim Boos, his team, Rob Baron and with appreciation to Roman Abramovich. When we protect nature, nature protects us. Respect the dunes and please stay off the restoration so they can recover. Enjoy Gouverneur Beach. To learn more contact us
